Illustrator Project
Software Purpose: Create graphic images, posters, flyers, infographics, or other files for either print or digital use.
Workshop Project: Create an infographic to display statistical information and timelines about the Adobe Creative Campus program in a visually appealing format. I followed the demonstration provided by our Adobe mentor Donna, and I also played around with 3D effects for the people and the pie chart objects.
The final infographic image for "Adobe Creative Campus Quick Facts" is below.
Favorite Features: I've used Illustrator a few times on my own. I actually created my wedding invitations using the software! But I've never used Illustrator for posters or infographics, so this was a great learning experience. During our workshop, I found the following software features helpful:
(1) Data-Driven Objects: It was fun to learn how to add a data visualization object, like the pie chart, and easily enter the percentages for each piece. It's a great way to supplement written percentages for an infographic or poster.
(2) Object Merging: I loved learning how to merge the rectangle and circle to create little people for the top part of the infographic! It's an easy way to create objects without searching for a external image outside of the software.
(3) Curvature Tool: Making the straight line into a curved line for the timeline image was really fun to learn. It allows fore more customization of the simple objects, which is great.
(4) 3D Effects: Although we didn't have time to explore the 3D effects in our breakout room, Eric's great guide showed me how to play around with this feature. I created 3D effects on the pie chart and 10 people at the top.
Classroom Uses: My students could use Illustrator in the following ways:
(1) Infographic: In a number of my classes, students have to do research on various IT-related topics. Typically they use a PowerPoint slide to summarize what they find, but I think teaching them how to use illustrator to make a more visually-appealing infographic instead would be a great skill for them to learn and list on their resume.
(2) Logo or Poster: In some of my classes, students have to pitch a new business or technology idea. As part of this, I usually have them create a logo or poster advertising their idea. Illustrator is definitely an option for both of these tasks!
